Synopsis

Charles Dickens' feminist novel Dombey and Son portrays the existence of gender bias towards male children even in wealthy society. Florence's birth as female baby did not bring any happiness to her father Paul Dombey as he was expecting a son to continue his business empire. Paul's ignorance of her daughter only quantified, when his son was born. His efforts in grooming his son did not go well as expected by him. As his son was born only after maternal death of his wife, Mr. Dombey's trouble were only aggregating. He started blaming Florence for his son's poor health and eventually appoints a wet nurse to take care of him. Paul dies very soon which eventually made Florence's life miserable and after being assaulted by her father she runs-away from home. Dombey's life style lead to bankruptcy and finally he has to live under the shadow of Florence.
