Synopsis
Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol's political fiction novel Dead Souls exposed the political scams in the 18th century Russian Empire. Farm labors called Serfs are allowed to be owned by Landlords in the then Russia. Landlords are taxed based on the Serfs they own, and the delay in Serf Census lead to to unnecessary expense of paying tax for Serfs who are dead or called Dead Souls. The protagonist rather antagonist Paul Ivanovitch Chichikov bought the dead souls from landlords and secured huge loans from government against the serfs he owned only in records. Nikolai was exiled for publishing this novel which exposed the corruption in various government bodies.Similar Bookshelves
