Synopsis

Though American Fairy Tales was written by the man of fantasy Lyman Frank Baum, these stories not only miss his trademark fantasy elements, but also take up a heavy tone which is unusual for a fairy genre. We must consider the fact that Baum might have targeted not only children but even adult readers as audience for this work since it was originally published in a serial form in a magazine. The twelve stories in this collection are The Box of Robbers, The Glass Dog, The Queen of Quok, The Girl Who Owned a Bear, The Enchanted Types, The Laughing Hippopotamus, The Magic Bon Bons, The Capture of Father Time, The Wonderful Pump, The Dummy That Lived, The King of the Polar Bears, and The Mandarin and the Butterfly.
